Long View Across Oia
Oia really typifies the white painted houses of the Cyclades. In many cases the houses were built directly into niches which are cave houses that were used by ship crew members, on the lip of the volcanic crater, between which are narrow alleys and blue-roofed churches. The wealthy ship captains of the late 19th century built neo-classical mansions here. These houses are seen built in succession one above the other.
It has a very Escheresque look with stairs going in all directions without any sense of organization. Houses built on top of houses wherever there was room available. It's what makes this island so unique and beautiful.
